These easy Red Velvet Cake Mix Cookies are a family favorite, but they get a holiday twist with the addition of red, white, and blue M&M’s!
I love making fun cookies for every holiday! This cake mix cookie recipe can be used for so many holidays by swapping out the M&M candies for colors that match your holiday needs.
Think red and pink for Valentine’s day, green and red for Christmas. The ones I’m sharing today even have a red/white/blue mixture for the 4th of July.
I use the same type of color swapping trick to make Pinwheel Cookies for different holidays! These red velvet cookies are a fun, easy, and delicious recipe that is great to make with the kids!
Why We Love Red Velvet Cookies
Using a cake mix for cookies takes some of the measuring and mixing out of the process and makes it a tiny bit faster. This Red Velvet cookies recipe is a little bit chocolate and a little bit sugar cookie, with the cocoa powder already in the cake mix.
These cookies come out moist and soft with a tiny little crunch from being rolled in sugar before baking. Cake Mix cookies come out fluffy and soft, like your favorite bakery cookies, but they are so much more affordable and fun activity for the whole family.
What Are Red Velvet Cookies Made Of
Red Velvet Cake Mix: All of the dry ingredients for these cookies come in a nice pre-mixed box
Vegetable Oil: Add some moisture to the cookies and help them stick together
Eggs: You need an ingredient to bind the ingredients and give them stability
M&M’s Candies: Red, White, and Blue for this recipe, but swap them out for your other holiday needs
Granulated Sugar: For rolling the dough in before baking. This will give you cookies a little extra sparkle!
Variations
- You can use white chocolate chips in place of the M&M’s if you don’t need a holiday or color theme.
- Make an easy cream cheese frosting to top your cookies with, in place of candies. Just make half a batch of frosting to have enough for your cookies.
How to Make Red Velvet Cookies
MIX the cookie dough in a stand mixer or using a hand mixer and a large bowl. Add in half of the M&Ms and mix again.
CHILL the cookie dough for one hour. This is SUPER IMPORTANT!!
SCOOP the cookie dough into balls and roll in sugar. Place them on baking sheets with parchment paper.
BAKE cookies while watching them and remove them when they look almost done.
TOP with more M&M candies.
COOL for five minutes on a baking sheet so they finish baking through. Then cool completely ti room temperature on a wire rack.
Tips & Tricks
- It is extremely important that you chill these cookies for at least 45 minutes and not longer than 1 hour. The dough will be too soft to shape and roll without chilling. Prior to the 1-hour mark, these cookies really puff up and have more of a soft and chewy texture, after 1 hour they can become hard and crunchy.
- Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months.
What Flavor is Red Velvet
Red velvet is kind of like a chocolate cake, but not really. There is a little bit of cocoa powder in the cake mix, and this gives a hint of chocolate flavor with a tangy finish from the buttermilk and vinegar.
Other Cake Mix Cookies
You don’t have to stop at red velvet cookies or the 4th of July cookies when using cake mix! Here are some other fun and tasty variations!
Valentine’s Day: Swap out the red, white, and blue M&Ms for the pink and white blend.
Christmas: Swap ou for the red, white, and green M&Ms blend.
Yellow Cake: This is my all-time favorite cake flavor. Top your cake mix cookies with some chocolate pudding frosting and you are going to swoon!
Lemon Cake: Bake up your cookies and drizzle (or dip) lemon glaze over the top. YUM!

Ingredients
- 15.25 ounces red velvet cake mix (1 box)
- ⅓ cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup red, white & blue M&Ms
- ½ cup granulated sugar for coating
Instructions
Add the cake mix, vegetable oil, and eggs to a large bowl or stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment and beat until combined.
Fold in half of the M&M’s.
Chill the dough for 60 minutes. Do not skip this step!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
Use a medium cookie scoop to portion out the dough and gently roll into balls. Then roll the balls in the sugar to coat. Place the balls of dough on the prepared baking sheet at least 2 inches apart.
Bake for 8 to 9 minutes. Do not over bake these cookies, they will look puffy and slightly underdone, but they will finish cooking on the baking sheet after coming out of the oven.
Press the M&M’s into the tops of the cookies right after they come out of the oven, then let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
