BMW over mogelijkheid terugkeer in Formule 1 als motorleverancier (2024)

Steeds meer autofabrikanten uiten hun interesse in de Formule 1. Naast de huidige motorleveranciers - Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes en Renault - sluiten Audi en Ford zich aan vanaf 2026 en General Motors met Cadillac vanaf 2028. BMW laat echter weten dat het in de nabije toekomst niet zal deelnemen aan de koningsklasse.

Voor het F1-seizoen van 2026 zullen nieuwe technische reglementen worden geïntroduceerd. Ook de motorreglementen worden daarbij aangepast. De 1,6 liter V6-turbo hybride power unit blijft, maar de MGU-H zal uit de krachtbron worden gehaald om kosten te besparen. Desondanks hoopt men dat er meer elektrisch vermogen zal worden gebruikt door de MGU-K op te schroeven van 120 naar 350 kilowatt (van 160 naar 470 pk). Het doel is om de verbrandingsmotor minder te gebruiken en zo slechts 70 in plaats van 100 kilogram benzine per race te verbruiken. De benzine voor 2026 zal sowieso 100% duurzaam worden om proberen de Formule 1 CO2-neutraal te maken vanaf 2030. BMW lijkt dit echter niet innovatief genoeg te vinden.

Geen nieuwe technologie

"De Formule 1 is zeker altijd interessant, maar momenteel voor ons als merk staat het niet op de radar," verklaarde hoofd van BMW Motorsport Andreas Roos tegenover Speedcafe. "Of het ligt niet in de juiste window, om het zo te zeggen, voor ons om te zeggen dat we mee zouden willen doen. Momenteel is het plan in de Formule 1 om in 2026 te komen met een verbrandingsmotor met een hybridesysteem, iets dat we al jaren in productieauto's zien. Het is dus niet echt een nieuwe technologie of iets waarvan we denken dat het erg interessant is."

WEC doet al wat F1 vanaf 2026 gaat doen

BMW racet met de M Hybrid V8 al met een hybrideauto in het IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship en het FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). "Als we eerlijk zijn, de hybrideauto's, daar racen we al mee in het World Endurance Championship met duurzame brandstof. De benzine in het WEC is al 100% duurzaam en volgens mij ook voor 60% CO2-neutraal met de focus om dat te verbeteren. Als de Formule 1 dit pas in 2026 met zich meebrengt, dan is het iets waar we eigenlijk al mee racen in het WEC als we kijken naar de technologie," vervolgde Roos. De Duitser laat dus duidelijk weten dat de Formule 1 voor hun niet de plek is om nieuwe technologie te ontwikkelen en heeft daarom geen interesse in de koningsklasse.
