Here are some commonly asked questions

Can these cookies be made ahead of time?

You bet. This cookie dough can be made ahead of time and kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days prior to baking. Make sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap so it doesn’t dry out. Let it sit out at room temperature for about 10 minutes before rolling and baking.

What is the best way to store red velvet crinkle cookies?

These cookies will keep for up to 5 days if kept in an airtight container at room temperature. I don’t recommend refrigerating them once they are rolled in sugar as the moist air will make the cookies absorb the sugar and they won’t have that crinkle look anymore.

Ingredients for Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • eggs
  • butter– melted
  • confectioner’s sugar
  • cornstarch

Can these cookies be frozen?

Sure – The dough freezes well. You can roll it into balls (don’t dip them in sugar), place them on a baking sheet, and freeze them until firm.

Then just store them in an airtight container or plastic freezer bag.

To bake, remove as many balls as you need from the freezer and let thaw for 30 minutes, then roll in the sugar and bake.

Why You Should Make This Recipe

  • Cute– These red velvet cookies are show-stoppers and are perfect for any festive holiday event.
  • Easy– While the cookies may look like they took a ton of time, this cake mix cookie recipe is actually SUPER simple to make. It’s an easy recipe with VERY little hands-on prep time.
  • Convenient– All of the ingredients are easy to source at your local store if you don’t already have them on hand.
  • Portable– You can just as easily serve these at your holiday get-together at home (or to munch on during family movie night) as you can throw them on cookie platters to take to holiday parties or a cookie exchange.

How to Make Red Velvet Cake Mix Crinkle Cookies

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Line several baking sheets with parchment and set aside.
  3. Combine the cake mix, eggs, and melted butter in a large bowl. Mix together using a firm rubber spatula until all of the dough is smooth and thick.
  4. In a small bowl, combine the confectioner’s sugar and cornstarch. Stir together with a fork.
  5. Scoop the dough using a medium cookie scoop. I like to scoop and release it directly into the bowl with the sugar mixture and then use the fork to roll it around to coat it in sugar so I don’t get the sticky dough all over my hands.
  6. Once the dough ball is coated, place it on the prepared baking sheet. Continue until all of the dough is portioned out.
  7. Bake each baking sheet in its own batch for 9-12 minutes.
  8. Remove and let cool on the baking sheet for several minutes before transferring to a wire rack to finish cooling.
  9. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Can I make these cookies from scratch?

Yes – if you want to make these cookies without cake mix – check out my Red Velvet Crinkle Cookie recipe. It does require chill time of at least 2 hours before baking – so plan accordingly. But they are well worth the wait.

What if I don’t have Red Velvet Cake Mix?

You can substitute the red velvet cake mix with a German chocolate cake mix + 2 tablespoons of flavorless gel food color. It is important that the food color is flavorless though to minimize the not-so-great flavor that tends to overpower recipes when using that quantity.

Variations and Add-ins

  • Sprinkles– Add sprinkles for either Christmas or Valentine’s Day depending on when you will be enjoying these cookies.
  • Chocolate Chips– Add chocolate chips to the mix before rolling in the sugar and baking.
  • Frosting– Add frosting to the top of the cookie for added deliciousness.
  • Filling– To make these super decadent – you can take the frosting and use it as a filling to make these cookies into a sandwich cookie. They will look similar to a whoopie pie and be super cute.
